Personality:
Sarcastic
When Robin claims to speak four languages fluently (not including Pig Latin), she actually lives out the fifth language of sarcasm. While most of her life she bit down on quick and witty remarks, actively sassing people, and otherwise teasing nature, in her growing acceptance of herself Robin comes to use sarcasm not only for amusement, but to protect herself. People are less likely to lash out verbally at someone who can come back with better lines quicker. The manifestation can vary from keeping 'vital statistics' on how many times someone fails in flirting, to teasing over appearance or social norms, and even up to using sarcastic diatribes to lay out what makes her uncomfortable with a situation. In a way this just reflects her intelligence and quick thinking, but even when that's not in play she sometimes throws around sarcastic remarks or names (including Dingus at her best friend) because it can help keep a distance between her soft, squishy inside and the 'consuming monster' of high school and later the stress presented to her in the form of all of the drama around the Upside-Down.
Independent
Robin was a bit of a latchkey kid, raised by a pair of hippies that seemed ill prepared to raise a daughter in the midwest. Especially a daughter that they weren't really prepared to have. This meant that Robin was often expected to take care of herself a lot of the time since she was about ten. Getting to and from school, cooking dinner for herself and her parents, and even just spending time alone outside of marching band season. This only continued after her sophomore year in high school, where she learned that forcing herself to conform and cling to what small groups she could find to fit into wasn't nearly as good as being true to herself and accepting that she's never going to want to fit in, even if she wants acceptance. Granted, this independent streak and ability to function actually helped her a lot in being assertive and putting herself into activities combating the Upside-Down in Hawkins Indiana.
Empathetic
While Robin does value her independence and is quick to offer a harsh word or even middle finger to people who are causing her frustration, she's also prone to deep empathy (though she does try to hide it). She feels deep pity for a girl in the her high school band who gets harassed for her more private nature and propensity to wear only white. When her Japanese-American friend Milton from the band comments over the propensity of non-white men in music videos from bands he loves to be rendered to stereotypes she starts to feel frustrated and angry whenever she sees any real display of racial stereotypes or other mistreatment. She even, once she comes to understand the difficulties faced by Steve Harrington (a classmate she previously hated and mocked as coworkers), came to feel for the difficulties he had and see him in a new light. Given the motivation to understand someone, Robin's concern for them and people like them spreads to the point where she will reorganize her understanding of the world to better support and care for that person or anyone else who might be like them.
