Hey it's really fine. I'm a queen of snide remarks. Not that I'll like throw one right back at her because that would be a really good way to tank movie night. But there's no way she can say something that would actually throw me off? Like, she hasn't been in high school forever and high schoolers have SUCH better insults.

Most likely it'll be a veiled insult about me. But I appreciate you holding your tongue...She can be intense.

And not for the first time I'm wondering why there isn't some sort of exam or license required for having kids? Okay, yeah, that would probably be messed up and used to hurt people, but it sounds like your mom is a real piece of work.

Honestly, I think she wants to relive her glory days through me somehow.

No offense meant, because you're definitely the queen of the school and all that, but literally I can't imagine how sad it must be for high school to be your glory days. Man does the world ever suck for women when that's what we're expecting.

I don't want to be the queen of the school, though. Yeah, we have to live up to this image...that realistically is never going to happen. It's exhausting. I barely even like Jason. He's such a jerk.

Totally fair. Though why do you have to live up to it? Or date Jason. You could actually just not do both of those things.

I have to play the role that was made for me, don't I?

No. Literally no. Absolutely no. If I did that I'd be a new generation of hippy. Or a far more mindless little band drone. Or dating someone even though all the boys at Hawkins suck.

I just feel like I can't break out of this mold everyone expects. Popular cheerleader dating the jock.

Listen, if you're staying in it for you, then okay. And if you're staying in it because you're scared of your mom, then okay. But if you're staying in it because of what people at school will think, get free. These may not be the glory years like your mom wants to relive, but they don't have to be the most miserable either.

It's all of those things. It just feels like I'm drowning sometimes. I spend so much time trying to be who people think I should be that I don't know who I am.

You just described my sophomore year. But we're seniors now, Chrissy. If there is ever a time to consider finding yourself, this is it.

I'm not even sure I'd know where to begin, honestly.

Well, you're talking to an expert. Start with clothes. Clothes that are actually you.

My mom would DIE.

Oh, but here's the beautiful thing. Gym locker! I had a friend in band who did that. Her parents were SUPER religious and would never put up with her having fun clothes. So she quietly acquired them and stored them at school.

I hadn't thought about that. For the most part my clothes are okay...but I feel like I could be edgier, you know?

[work_wife]

Too bad the mall isn't around anymore, there were some good stores for that. Though I know some places to find some options. I pick up things every now and then.

I like your style. You seem so comfortable with who you are, even if you think you're awkward.

[work_wife]

Oh, I'm totally awkward. And a klutz. But there's definitely things you can do. I think with all those cheerleader sweaters no one would even blink if you picked up a vest or two.

Guess there is. I can take you to where I get some stuff when I need new things.

Awesome. I'll ask Steve to cover for me some afternoon. If you can do a weekday afternoon. Family Video doesn't need me as much then.
